I think one of the best examples of how to make the undead feel wrong and evil comes from AD&D, where many of these creatures had the ability of level draining, possibly taking away weeks or months (or even years depending on how you play and how unlucky you got) of hard work on a PC, and very possibly in a permanent way. All too often, undeads are just a different kind of monster and skeletons are just golems made out of bones. There is nothing wrong with summoning undead, especially if creating them is supposed to be a difficult and lengthy process, but if all you ever do in a game is summon undead other people created or that somehow came to be in some other way, it again removes a lot of what makes necromancers special.Īnother one is that the undead are supposed to be something otherworldly and evil. Particularly annoying is when the game doesn't allow you to create, but rather only summon undead. Still, it not only removes a lot of what makes necromancers interesting, it also makes the class feel phoney. To be fair, this is something especially hard to do in a computer game, as you might need specific art assets for each creature type you might want to raise. But it is equally frustrating that the skeleton of an ogre might be the same as the skeleton of a dwarf, mechanically speaking. All too often, the result of creating an undead has nothing to do with the base creature, like in Diablo 2 where you could burst a skeleton out of an insectoid enemy or Path of Exile where you can make a zombie out of an skeleton.
One important aspect a lot of games get wrong is the creation of undead. As such, I find that almost all computer games (and frequently even the material in pencil and paper games) end up falling short of what I would like the necromancer to be. While "black magic" in general is probably something interesting to give a necromancer, I tend to associate the word especially with the creation of undead monsters (that and someone who can talk with the dead rather than bringing them back, but that is usually something different even if it is also a common power of a necromancer).

I won a custom title for winning a 100 man free for all tournament with mine. (so very few people leveled them to their potential.)Īnd by far the best looking epic weapon in the game. Kill onsite to almost the entire game world. (often used in tandem with Feign death)Ī plethora of nasty disease, anti living, anti undead spells and one of the characters with the highest survivability/ utility in the game including a harm shield spell that could protect against everything even falls for 20 seconds. Raid saving shit hits the fan class, basically including Corpse summon ability on raid wipe. (more of a Damage over time spell than anything since you were a tank.)Īrguably best party-based and most self-sufficient tank and class with the highest ability to piss off monsters in the whole game, to the point a raid role we created ourselves in terms of agro stealing/ dropping and mob positioning.
(1 hour) That could also be modified to drain life. Massive disease based spell once a day, a nuke that rivaled wizard damage with upgrades but a long cool down. Shadowstep random teleport in a 100 meter radius on a short cast time that dominated Pvp.įastest horse in the game that was a high level ability. You could levitate, (Dead man Floating, bobbing corpse.) You could cast a spell to appear as a corpse. Although not focused on summons obviously.
But no rpg mmo or otherwise has ever come close to how bad ass it was for an evil based black magic style of character. Okay not technically a true Necromancer as they were a 3/1 Warrior Necro Hybrid.
(the original, not the terrible sequel or any of the spin off's.)
